Re: Meetup Theory

I generally find that organized activities or schedules tend to work the best - if only to cut short the endless debate that wastes your time for socializing. Bowling, a movie and then discussion afterward, a meal at a specific restaurant, even a board game has the potential to give people a structu...

Re: Needs and communication (mixed messages much)

I can't speak from personal experience, but I can pass on something from observing friends in relationships; communication is key. I don't think it's fair when someone is getting frustrated with what their partner does/doesn't do, and doesn't even communicate that frustration. It's like blaming your...

Re: Legitimacy and Blurry Lines

....you guys are starting to make my head hurt.

I want to say something to each of your posts, because they all deserve it - but when I started, I realized that I need to think about what you've brought up before I can! Thanks for the great responses though.

Re: Romantic attraction?

i think one of the greatest difficulties with talking about romantic attraction/drive is that everyone's definition is a little different. Sexual attraction is a little easier to pin down I think, if only because of the physiological component. But emotional and social connections of any kinda are a...

WAKE UP!

Ok, so as most of you (I hope) have realized by now, Karl has been awesome enough to trust me with hir baby for the everyday stuff. Unfortunately, some real life junk has prevented me from spending as much time here as I should've in the past little while, but I am here now and ready to roll! We nee...

Re: "I hate being asexual and want to change"

IMO, often those who are dissatisfied with their orientation are motivated by a desire to 'fit in' more that anything else. So, I think some things you could do is try and help such an individual feel more welcome/part of the community, or - like Heligan has mentioned - try and understand their othe...

Ambition and Motivation

So, I was wondering what kind of impact asexuality might have on ambition (professional or otherwise). I ask because I've heard this theory on occasion that the really ambitious characters in the world are fundamentally 'sexually driven'. Kind of a throw-back to the hunter-gatherer; whoever brings h...

Re: Dissasociative Identity Disorder and Sexuality

An Avenite was just talking about this recently. Zhe says that she's part of a multiple system, and is trying to deal with the compromises necessary for the different sexual preferences of the members. It's here ( http://www.asexuality.org/en/index.php?showtopic=32601&hl= ) if anyone's curious. ...

Re: New Admin Wanted

I think I'd be willing to. I'm at school this year, so I should have quite a bit of spare time. I love this forum - it's definitely more intellectual than AVEN, and I think that side of the asexual community needs to be represented. If no-one else more experienced offers, I'd definitely be up for it.

Re: Community Beyond Technology Conference

I've been talking to a couple people I know around Canada that are on different uni PRIDE organizations, and we've been playing with the idea of a nation-wide university 'education week' for sexual and gender variances ( I'm biased, and gave asexuality a separate spot of it's own :P ) I'm really goi...

Re: Are asexuals more likely to be bi?

Too funny - I was just thinking about this the other day. I generally call myself 'aromantic', and I've never experienced any kind of romantic attraction. But I was thinking about it, and I imagine that if I were either sexual or romantic, I'd most likely be bi. Like the others have stated, part of ...

Thanks to everyone who posted such great responses - I love how almost everyone here is so erudite and thoughtful in their posts. :D I realized that my original title wasn't really what I was getting at, so I changed it - sorry if I put up the dander for anyone. What I wanted to ask about were the n...

Re: The desexualization of people with disabilities

I was doing research for a presentation on asexuality recently, and I stumbled across this: http://www.springerlink.com/content/m2l3125017052r14/. It's relevant, so I thought I'd share.

Legitimacy and Blurry Lines

My AVEN birthday was on March 7th (I discovered asexuality a few months before, but it took me awhile to get up the courage to join) and it’s been a whirlwind of a year in terms of my growth in how I see myself. As I’m sure most of you can relate to, I was in a sense of euphoria for weeks after havi...
