Re: What studies would you want to see?

Can you say what type of data is available in this data set? I'm really interested in the qualitative side of this and wonder if there are open responses or similar data. The only open response questions were related to occupation. Much of the survey is composed of detailed sexual histories, but al...

Re: What studies would you want to see?

Yay! I've got the data that Bogeart used. It is indeed rich data. Based on a cautious reading of the end user agreement, I will not post anything I find on this forum. Instead I will endeavor to produce working papers or research notes on my results.

Re: Sexual repression?

pretzelboy, thanks for another enlightening and thought-provoking post. I heartily agree that the concept, and even the term, "sexual repression" are useless. If someone is in denial about their sexuality, we should simply label that denial. I believe there are at least as many people in d...

Re: Why do we organize as asexuals?

This is truly wonderful. I have always been sports-indifferent. I think that it is at least as socially ostracizing as asexuality, maybe more so. I wonder if the same genes that predispose one to asexuality also affect sports-receptivity... ;)

Re: I'm not sure I believe in sexual attraction anymore

I've spent my career building "abstract representations of [human] reality." Of course these model are all "wrong" in the larger sense, but they are useful when they provide some insight and, dare I say it, some predictive power to some aspect of human behavior and interaction. Y...

Re: Why do we organize as asexuals?

Participating in the highly contentious election process without a policy agenda is one way to be "visible," but it is hardly the best way to gain acceptance. The "Asexuals United Party" would make us look like a bunch of fringe nutcases!

Re: A new theory of sexuality

Dargon, I think I agree with you. If we were to apply a simple version of your system, we would say that person x's sexuality is romance(high, hetero) + sex(lo, bi). I admit that I am too ignorant to critically comment on pretzelboy's post. To be frank, I included the pan orientation simply because ...

Re: A new theory of sexuality

What you are proposing is to locate an individual at point on a multidimensional hyperplane. Of course that is the "right" model, but it is often useful to generate simpler models that cover most cases most of the time, which was really my intention. Under you system we would need to descr...

A new theory of sexuality

**I'll be posting the following idea on AVEN to get broad reaction. The discussion here tends to be more measured and thoughtful, so I welcome comments here to.** I have not yet seen a comprehensive theory of sexual orientation that accounts for all of the glorious diversity that is evident in the a...

Re: What studies would you want to see?

pretzelboy, your intellectual caution is an example to us all. However, you should not underestimate the usefulness of imperfect datasets. I've never met a perfect one. A 70% response rate to a survey of this scale is a great success. There are established techniques for dealing with selection bias....

Re: What studies would you want to see?

A disturbing finding in Bogaert's study was that low education, low socioeconomic status, and poor health were correlated with asexuality. It is important to know what is driving this. It has long been known that these outcomes are also correlated with unmarried status. Does a tendency not to marry,...

Re: I'm not sure I believe in sexual attraction anymore

Hello! I'm new here. I'm far from being a sex expert. However, it seems to me that this thread may actually be moving us toward resolving the puzzle of defining the attraction that asexuals, by the usual definition, don't feel. pretzelboy argues that there are many components to sexual attraction. I...
