Re: treatment of minorities

If I'm going to consider a forum reasonably busy, I'd like to see about 10 new posts a day. More than that is usually too much. Apositive reaches that threshold at the very busiest of times. I would like to see more regularly active members on here, but that requires a level of promotional activity ...

Re: No sex, wtf

I know one person who has always hated sex and is not asexual. Being asexual and hating sex are two completely different things that do not necessitate or exclude each other.

Today it's sunny but the temperature is 13 degrees with a wind chill of -4. (That's Fahrenheit for you overseas people.) I have things to do but can't motivate myself to leave my relatively warm room.

Thank you very much. :) The forum looks pretty dead, but hopefully it will revitalize if the word spreads that it exists.

Re: Asexuality and feminism

One of my deepest, most strongly held beliefs is that men and women ARE essentially equal in what we think of as "human" qualities; meaning that neither sex is inherently more moral, more intelligent, more self-serving or more personally responsible than the other. I think bitter experien...

Re: treatment of minorities

I have no objection to the presence of people who are what I'd call "ace-curious," meaning they've just discovered asexuality as a concept and want to find out more about it. This applies both to people who think they might be asexual and to confirmed sexuals with open minds. Two of the be...

Re: Asexuality and feminism

I suspect that Michael is using hyperbole, because "the whole world" would have to include places like Africa, China, the Middle East, India, various island nations, and all sorts of third world countries. There are some aspects of feminism which bother me, though. What kinds of specific ...

Re: Asexuality and feminism

Just curious Michael that if you think feminists truly run the whole world then how do you explain the wage gap between men and women, or the fact that most governments are predominantly male or that most businesses are predominantly run by males? Also if it is a small number of women pulling all t...

Re: treatment of minorities

Any other definition of "minority" is self-serving hype created by feminists when they realized, much to their embarrassment, that women are actually the majority at 53% of the world's population. "Oops," they thought, "we can no longer ride the coattails of minorities in o...

Re: treatment of minorities

As a species, humans just don't seem to do a very good job when it comes to encouraging social equality. Everybody wants to feel better than somebody else, and the vast majority of us want to belong to a group that considers itself to be somehow superior to some other group. I call these groups &qu...

Re: Asexuality and feminism

Feminism has always been about a small, tight-knit group of women acquiring personal power at the expense of other women, and exploiting men's weaknesses (such as a desire to be reasonable) in order to do so. Now that they run the whole world, they see a need to perpetuate feminism as a movement so ...

Re: treatment of minorities

I'm not exactly sure what you meant by a minority. Did you mean, groups that are fewer in number, ones that don't have much of a voice, ones that get very little discussion, or ones that are habitually silenced or opposed? The word "minority" is defined as "fewer in number than 50% o...

And on that topic, particularly with regards to asperger's, I've noticed the opposite of Siggy in my time at AVEN. To be honest, it did at a point reach a point where not having asperger's seemed to make one the odd one out. At risk of sounding quite politically incorrect, it was almost as though A...

Siggy, I'll accept your statistics, but if that's the case, then the cis-gendered are largely a silent majority. I still think that our voices tend to get drowned out. I had some very ugly run-ins with a hypercombative and fight-loving autistic person on Knights of the Shaded Triangle and am therefo...

debiguity, Has there been any talk about perpetuating the family name? Hi, Pook. It's relatively quiet here, and it can take a couple of days for people to reply to a new post, and we get the occasional "mole" from AVEN who's here only to stir up s***, but in general this is a nice place. Welcome and enjoy.

Since people are talking about their own personal experiences, I guess I'll add my own. I don't particularly feel a need for close friendship. treatment of minorities

Some bright person once said that a community can be evaluated on the basis of how it treats its minorities. The asexual community has minoirities within it as well, and one measure of the community is how those minorities are treated by the majority of asexuals. For one thing, men are a minority am...

Re: AVENues

Siggy, The magazine is called "AVENues." That makes its connection to AVEN obvious. The word "AVEN" is part of the magazine name. All of the contributors, AFAIK, are AVEN members. The spotlight interview is with an AVEN member, when there are 30 million unaffiliated asexuals in t...

Disjointed, when deleting material from something someone wrote in order to quote a smaller version of it, it's customary to use ellipses (...) to indicate that you have deleted material. What you purported to quote above is NOT what I wrote. You chopped out a paragraph without giving any indication...

Siggy, This isn't AVEN, so the little cozy cabal that controls AVEN has no power here. The editors of that self-serving rag might _want_ to be helped, but they're not entitled to _demand_ it on this forum. And neither are you. In fact, no matter what your status on AVEN might be, officially or unoff...

I read the magazine and it's self-serving on AVEN's part. It does not exist to help asexuals. It exists to glorify AVEN. Why Nancy permits this spam to be posted on her forum, I have no idea.

the whiteout thread

We were supposed to get 18 inches of snow during the current storm, but it looks like we'll end up with only 5 to 8.

Meanwhile, places such as Missouri and Indiana are getting wallopped, and even Arkansas is getting a dusting.

Anyone here have a story about the current winter storm?

the other kind of loneliness

To most people on earth, "loneliness" refers to the need for a romantic partner who is very often a sexual partner. But to an aromantic ace, it refers to the need for human contact in the absence of romance or sex. What word do people use for the other kind of loneliness, the one that does...

Re: Benedict Cumberbatch on Alan Carr Show

I don't get British talk shows in Canada, but what you've described doesn't surprise me. Writers have a history of social consciousness, while actors (and talk show hosts) have a history of being self-involved, so the fact that the writers thought of Holmes as asexual and the actor (and talk show ho...
