Asexual Awareness Week 2011 Census

As part of the preparation for Asexual Awareness Week 2011 next month, a census of the asexual community is being held and to goal is to have as many people to fill it out as possible. This survey is only intended for people who identify as asexual, demisexual, gray-asexual, or any combination of th...

Re: Updating of the AVENwiki

The best dates I have for the end of the Official Nonlibidoism thingy is based on the wayback machine. I've also done some searches before to see it talked about on AVEN. Other than that, I don't know too much about it. My impression is that it never had much of an influence in the asexual community...

Re: Hi from new member and question for admins

I've heard of some anecdotal evidence from clinicians who suggested asexuality with very positive results. However, asexual identity seems to mostly (although not exclusively) be about people who have never really been interested in sex, whereas most of the stuff on HSDD is about people who used to ...

Re: Hi from new member and question for admins

Hi Ty, I may have been reading my own thoughts about some of the research into your comments... My own interest in HSDD largely stemmed my early attempts to find out everything I could about asexuality that I could. There wasn't much, so I thought that there might be some useful stuff that could per...

Re: Hi from new member and question for admins

Recently, there has been a considerable growth in the number of people researching asexuality, including a number who identify as asexual, almost all of whom are grad students. I'm also aware of a number who are presently in grad school and have plans to begin doing research on asexuality in the nex...

A blog that I follow, Crossdreamers had a rather interested post recently on the issue of trans infighting when four tribes go to war . Four sepratist groups and a unionist group are described: The People's Front of Judea 1. There are some organized crossdressers, who insist that they are gender var...

Re: Survey finds 3rd of young Japanese men not interested in sex

One quote really stands out to me: "Obviously, the most important reason for Japan's declining birth rate is that people are not having sex," Dr. Kunio Kitamura, head of the Japan Family Planning Association, told The Daily Telegraph." This is pretty clearly wrong. People can have lot...

Re: the activism bug

Well, this thread seems to have a weird way of talking about three very distinct things. I'm going to address the functional vs. innate asexual issue. To start with, at some level I have long thought that there is something to the distinction, though I've never come up with terms for it, largely bec...

Re: Plan B Ad

Let me modify that a bit there Friday, I guess this is what annoys me a bit. People on AVEN are like sheep, a couple of people tell them how angry and offended they should be feeling and how they should sign some petition, and they just go along with it without much independent thought. It's all a b...

Re: Plan B Ad

I interpreted the Plan B color scheme as blue with a bit of green--to see if the purple and gray for asexuality might be just coincidental, I made sure to check the colors for the product, and I didn't feel that they could at all explain the use of purple and gray.

Re: Plan B Ad

I'm not sure I'd have too much of a problem with it if all there was was the video, but with the purple, gray, against a white background? I simply cannot accept that this is a coincidence. Either they saw us as a sort of joke and wanted to promote their product by making fun of us, or it was more m...

Cool! Someone here should edit the AVENwiki's article on Apositive too! Yeeessss, the wiki wants someone to an article... On a more serious note, I haven't chimed in on this thread yet, but I've been following it attentively and I've found it absolutely fascinating. A couple of points: In my recoll...

Re: Why do I get the feeling this is a bad idea?

I like to echo some of flergalwit comments and expand on them: In some ways, much of the discussion here may be premature. All that has occurred up to this point is that a) someone suggested the idea on AVEN, b) one member of the PT liked it and talked to other members of the PT about it, and c) som...

Re: Why do I get the feeling this is a bad idea?

Then again, with the Project Team's complete lack of so much as an official statement regarding their stance in the whole flag debacle, it is not as though the PT carries much weight in the debauchery of the masses of AVEN anyway. And, since you've called all of us stupid anyway, I doubt you'd even...

Re: Why are sexual thoughts called 'dirty'?

Judaism and Islam don't teach that sexual thoughts/dreams are dirty. Some versions of Christianity seem to, those which teach that the "evil" of sex stems from Eve eating the apple. Most cultures seem to proscribe sex at certain times of womens' cycles (fear of blood) and married women (b...

Re: Why are sexual thoughts called 'dirty'?

While I lack a definitive answer, it is a matter I've thought about from time to time. In certain groups, there is a tendency to blame religion (or certain religions) for the idea that sex is dirty. To me, this seems myopic, and little more than at attempt to justify one's sexual ideology in spite o...

Re: Pathology and Asexual Politics

A political question that those challenging the pathologization of asexuality must ask is whether to challenge the pathologization of asexuality only or whether to challenge the pathologization of sexual disinterest more generally. This is an important question because asexuals seem to be a small m...

Re: Repulsed asexuals

Perhaps one substantial argument against needing labels for attitudes for sex is that most people in the asexual community seem fine without them, and for those who do, it's often not clear what they mean because of the ambiguity between attitudes about sex in the abstract (i.e. when it's other peop...

ARE repulsed and anti-sexual asexuals seen by outsiders at all? In all the media representations I've seen of asexuality, it seems like there is always the idea that "we're fine with sex as long as it doesn't involve us". (which obviously is only one point of view among many, but that's t...

Re: Low sexual desire is not a disease. Stop FDA approval of Fli

I think this is one of those counter-factuals that is pretty much impossible to answer. The data was right there and the right decision was fairly obvious. The only doubt was that the FDA could potentially cave to pressure, which is why it was felt to be important to have counter-pressure from consu...

Or do you have objections to the article about whether asexuals are oppressed? If it's the latter, I'm very interested in getting feedback on the article. If it's the former, w...

I guess in my last post my link to the square of opposition was a bad way to explaon myself. Cold is the opposote of hot. If something is hot, its not cold. The drug companies make a great many products that really do help people, but it's their marketing people that scare me (and a lot of other people.) "Opposite" is a rather vague concept that works best for terms that come in pairs (and many words are felt to be contrastive pairs): black and white; hot and cold; short and long, etc. In other contexts, "opposite" is more problematic, for example in the square of opposition . Wh...
