I also get this with words like homosexual and queer. Homosexual has apparently become a slur in America (fortunately not yet in Britain), and I'm like "But I need that word. I'm not gay. I'm just homosexual!" And queer is apparently more offensive in some parts of Britain than it is in A...

Interesting post...I'll admit, I don't mind the term "ace". At least in the US, it's not a word that has common usage, unless you're going to an Ace Hardware store or playing cards. The only time I ever hear it used by non-asexuals is by indiepop fans from the UK, but maybe that's just me....

Actually, haha, the rainbow flag is used for Cusco, Peru, though it has seven bars. Since learning this fact, I've wondered how Peruvians feel about it. Probably a lot like the Greek Lesbos My grandmother still hasn't gotten over the fact that "gay" doesn't mean "happy" anymore.

I'm not against the idea of a flag, but as I said on AVEN, choosing a flag based on an internet poll just seems counter-intuitive to me. I think we'll probably end up having a flag someday, but symbols aren't things you can just choose in a poll. They acquire meaning with time and repeated use.

Good post. I came out as asexual late in college, so I didn't get a chance to join my school's LGBT group. However, since it was called "Coalition Against Homophobia", it was pretty obvious that it was a gay group, not a queer one. I have no idea what specific queer groups exist for people...
