Re: the activism bug

I believe that a functional asexual is still a perfectly valid asexual, with their asexuality being just as "real" as anybody else's, regardless of how it came about. They are just as out of step and alienated from the sexual world as any innate asexual, and for their fellow asexuals to a...

Re: Could you love/have a relationship with a mtf/ftm asexual?

I also get this with words like homosexual and queer. Homosexual has apparently become a slur in America (fortunately not yet in Britain), and I'm like "But I need that word. I'm not gay. I'm just homosexual!" And queer is apparently more offensive in some parts of Britain than it is in A...

Asexuality/Autism Blog Carnival: Call for Participation

Hey folks! There has been some discussion lately about asexuality and the autism spectrum in the asexual blogosphere, resulting in a few of us ( Kaz , Sciatrix , and myself) organizing a blog carnival on the topic. A blog carnival is an event where various people write posts around a single topic an...

Re: Asexual relationship energy and communities

Interesting post...I'll admit, I don't mind the term "ace". At least in the US, it's not a word that has common usage, unless you're going to an Ace Hardware store or playing cards. The only time I ever hear it used by non-asexuals is by indiepop fans from the UK, but maybe that's just me....

Re: Why do I get the feeling this is a bad idea?

I think mascots were first brought to meet-ups for helping new people to recognise the meet-people. So different places have had their own mascots. London got a new one when WW passed the organizing to Nigel. Our meetups have a "mascot" as well, to help people recognize the group (I copie...

That does sound hard. 8| I've never wanted to initiate sex, so I can't help you there. But as for the concept not computing for him...I think that most non-asexuals don't know what questions to ask in regards to asexuality. We can't rely on them asking questions because they don't know what informat...

Re: Opposite Sex Friendship

I'm surprised I haven't yet responded to this thread, because I've definitely had problems maintaining friendships with "the opposite sex" (which I put in quotes because I'm not a gender-binary fan). I'm female, and I haven't had a close male friend since I was in elementary school. I have...

Re: "I hate being asexual and want to change"

I don't see it as self-hatred. But maybe that's just me. I don't see it as self-hatred, either. Sometimes, I do feel down about being asexual and therefore "different". Don't get me wrong, there are other things that make me "different" as well, but when I was first realizing I ...

Re: On Demisexuality

After reading P's post, something hit me. Is it possible to experience attraction without libido? Yeah, I believe so. As an example, take people whose medication causes their libidos to be drastically lowered. They still might experience attraction, but without libido don't have an urge to act on t...

Re: Could you love/have a relationship with a mtf/ftm asexual?

My response would be similar to Ninny and Ally's. While I'm more attracted to men, I wouldn't discount a relationship with a woman. So yeah, considering I'm pretty apathetic about gender, it wouldn't matter to me what genitalia someone had. I mean, damn, it's hard enough to find potential romantic p...

Re: Repulsed asexuals

Interesting topic. This might get me yelled at, but I'd like to say this somewhere - I think "repulsed asexual" sounds pretty awful as a term & identity. I agree, it's an odd term, especially as it is part of this "repulsed vs. indifferent" binary. Does anyone know where this...

Re: The Creation of a Flag

Actually, haha, the rainbow flag is used for Cusco, Peru, though it has seven bars. Since learning this fact, I've wondered how Peruvians feel about it. Probably a lot like the Greek Lesbos My grandmother still hasn't gotten over the fact that "gay" doesn't mean "happy" anymore.

Re: The Creation of a Flag

I'm not against the idea of a flag, but as I said on AVEN, choosing a flag based on an internet poll just seems counter-intuitive to me. I think we'll probably end up having a flag someday, but symbols aren't things you can just choose in a poll. They acquire meaning with time and repeated use.

Re: Oppression and asexuality

I'm not sure if asexuals would be considered oppressed as a group, considering how few people even know we're a group. As a group, we are invisible, which brings its own issues. Just because something might not be "oppression" per se doesn't mean that everything is all fine and dandy. Ther...

Re: Ace-friendly LGBT groups

Good post. I came out as asexual late in college, so I didn't get a chance to join my school's LGBT group. However, since it was called "Coalition Against Homophobia", it was pretty obvious that it was a gay group, not a queer one. I have no idea what specific queer groups exist for people...
